The Unseen Effects of Solar Radiation
Sometimes we are asked the question “If most of the energy in direct sunlight is in the visible spectrum, wouldn’t a thin, highly reflective cover be enough?”
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.
We prefer the term ‘solar irradiance’ over ‘direct sunlight’ precisely because, by only thinking of light, it’s easy to overlook types of radiation that our eyes can’t see.
There are of material combinations that are able to reflect most of the visible light, however, these materials often do not perform as well against other types of radiation. As objects absorb radiation they heat up, emitting energy as infrared radiation. Infrared radiation is a potential threat throughout the entire journey of a payload, whereas visible light is only a threat when the payload is exposed to solar irradiance.
Softbox® SilverSkin® thermal covers are designed not only to reflect visible light but to be highly reflective of infrared radiation.
By striking this balance, SilverSkin® thermal covers keep your products protected at all times.
