Temperature Monitoring Position Can Cost

TP3 Global launches a brand new technical report illustrating how the positioning of temperature monitors on pallets can hugely impact temperature readings and consequently impact shipping and protection costs within the pharmaceutical supply chain.

In line with EU GDP guidelines, there is a responsibility to demonstrate that medicinal products have not been exposed to conditions that compromise quality and integrity. One of the most important of these conditions is temperature.

Temperature monitors provide the data required to demonstrate that stable temperature limits have not been exceeded during transit. The data collected by these monitors can vary hugely depending on their position so a clear understanding of the impact is essential.

TP3 Global have created a new report demonstrating two different approaches to temperature monitor positioning during transit and how this impacts resulting data.

Temperature monitors are placed as closely to the product as possible, inside the packaging

  1. Temperature monitors are placed outside the packaging but underneath the thermal protection (SilverSkin™ thermal covers were used in this study)

The first approach is most desirable but is not always possible and can be impractical, so method number two can be adopted. However, for this second method the temperatures outside the primary packaging change more rapidly than those next to the product. Thus, it is far more challenging, both thermally and operationally, to keep this temperature within limits as opposed to the ‘product temperature’.

This will often result in a requirement for a higher performing, higher cost thermal insulation and additional priority shipping services.

The report was created as a result of extensive performance and qualification testing carried out by TP3 Global using SilverSkin™ thermal pallet covers. Test methodologies are described in this technical report but a more detailed protocol is available by request.

Peter Lockett, COO and Technical Director, TP3 Global, states “We see shippers and logistics companies struggle with the balance of budget and thermal performance required. If a knowledge base of thermal data can substantiate the use of more affordable solutions such as thermal covers, this will benefit the industry hugely.”
